Tortress is a Level 4 wild ghost from the fractal family.
In "Tortress", it was awakened from its nest after a Central Park visitor dropped her apple onto it.
Appearance[]
Kawai mode[]
Tortress is a light green ghost with light green eyes, black scleras, and a light brown tortoiseshell on its head.
Booster mode[]
When in booster mode, Tortress resembles a giant tortoise but without any legs. Its shell resembles a fortress with spikes, one on top and multiple at its side similar to pillars.
History[]
Bridge episodes[]
At an unknown point, Tortress found a block of concrete underneath a bridge at Central Park and began using it as a nest. In "Tortress", a sewer rat stole a sausage from a nearby trash can and was walking on the side of the bridge. When the rat was about to eat the sausage, it was standing on the concrete block and disturbed Tortress from its slumber. The nest briefly glowed bright green and startled the rat away, but the ghost wasn't ready to come out.
Later, a cyclist was riding her bike around the park and zipped past a couple who were participating in the park's scavenger hunt. The man was so startled by the cyclist that he bumped into his girlfriend who dropped her apple from the bridge. The apple bounced off the concrete block and awakened Tortress in the process. Shortly after it left the nest, the ghost began terrorizing the park visitors by decelerating their movements while feeding on their fear. Its attack caught Liv's attention who secretly transformed into Myst and followed the ghost to Times Square.
After Tortress spooked three preteen girls and ingested their screams, the ghost went into booster mode. It was about to attack more people with its tortoiseshell projectiles, but the Ghostforce arrived to protect them. The four heroes took out their weapons to fight Tortress, but the ghost retreated its head into its fortress-like shell every time it noticed an incoming attack. Eventually, the ghost heard Krush charging toward it from behind, so it got out of the way and fired a projectile at him. Despite having only one of the heroes under the effect of its powers, Tortress left Times Square anyway and headed to the Brooklyn Bridge.
Tortress attacked various people at the bridge when the Ghostforce showed up to continue their fight. The ghost dodged their incoming attacks and tried to decelerate the movement for the rest of the team, but it was tricked into firing its projectile at Krush's incoming fractal attack. It didn't anticipate that the heroes would turn its speed deceleration against it, and ended up getting trapped under the fractal ice. Myst then released Octocat and deboosted Tortress back to its kawai mode before capturing it, restoring everyone's movements to their normal speed. Tortress was later sent to the Ghost Cloud where it now resides with the other captive ghosts.
Abilities[]
- Levitation: Tortress can levitate in its kawai and booster modes.
- Intangibility: Tortress can phase through solid objects. The only exceptions are when it is trapped in the Ghost Cloud or one of the Boo Caps.
Its unique ability is to decelerate people's movement whenever it phases through them, including their speaking patterns. This can also affect other ghost's powers since Krush's factual power moved slowly when he fired it at Tortress while under its influence.
After entering booster mode, it can fire tortoiseshell-like projectiles onto people to quickly decelerate their movement whenever they get hit by one. However, its weakness is its head similar to an actual tortoise. Whenever someone would attack the ghost, Tortress would retreat its head into its shell to protect itself. Whenever Tortress wants to fly somewhere else, it retreats its head and spins its shell to that location. Its flight ability can also be used as a spinning attack against its opponents, but it's unknown if its shell has the same powers as its projectiles when it hits someone.

Trivia[]
- Tortress's name is a portmanteau of the English words "tortoise" and "fortress", representing its appearance similar to the land animal and the shell being a fortress to defend itself.
- In the original French dub, the ghost's name is "Tortoresse".
- "Tortress" sounds like the English word "torturous".
- Ironically, despite resembling a tortoise known for being one of the slowest land animals on Earth, Tortress moves fast.
- Its nest being a block of concrete makes sense since concrete is one of the strongest, most durable, and long-lasting building materials.
- Fittingly, Tortress's awakening was the indirect result of a cyclist riding her bike at a fast speed and startling a couple into dropping an apple onto the nest.
